The Basic Elements of Windows

1.      Desktop: The screen space covered by the windows
2.      Window Borders: This is the outside edge of the windows
3.      Title Bar: This is the first line across the top of the windows that identifies the name of the document and the application.
4.      Mouse Pointer: This has different shapes in appearance dependent on the current operation taking place. It appears as a pointed arrow which helps select different application.

 
5.      Zoom Box: This displays a large portion of the window when it is clicked upon
6.      Control Menu Box: This component is a small box containing a dash when pulled down it has in it options that help a user control the window size of a system, close a document or terminate a program.
7.      The System Button: The right section of the title bar displays three small squares referred to as the system buttons. They are used to minimize, maximize, restore or close or exit an application / a window. These items are:



i.              Minimize Button: This appears as a hyphen. It is used to reduce the size of the window.
ii.            Maximize Button: It is used to increase the size of the application being worked upon.
iii.          Close Button: It is used to close the active window.
iv.          The Restore Button: It usually appears when the maximize button is clicked upon. It is used to restore the active window to its previous size.
8.      Menu Bare: This directly below the title bar. It lists the primary commands of the current application software that is being used. They include File, Edit Help and Save etc.
9.      The Scroll Bar: This is located at the button right of the window. There is the vertical scroll bar which is located at the right hand side, and the other at the button edge is the horizontal scroll bar. It is also important to note that scroll bars are available if icons are present in the window but do not appear on screen.
